Mastering Your Mind Control – and Why It Matters
By Dr. Cathy Greenberg
What if you don’t master your own mind?
Without mastery of your own mind, you can easily fall victim to your own undisciplined thoughts. Out of control in the most important moments of your life, you will most likely be unfocused. The result of surrendering to the negative thoughts will mean that you have minimized or completely sabotaged your success. By limiting your progress, you also decrease your joy and happiness.
Anyone can learn the techniques in this chapter because they are as simple as they are profoundly effective. Mastery of these skills may take time and commitment on your part, but they will give you the ability to continually improve your mental conditioning to think and feel more of how you would like to be.
Being the master of your mind can do more than increase your career success; as Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell discovered, it can save your life (his exploits are the subject of the recent movie “Lone Survivor,” based on his book of the same name).
Following a battle in the mountains found on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan that left him sole survivor, Luttrell made his painful way seven miles to where he was discovered by the Pashtun civilians who would protect him and care for his terrible injuries. He expected them to turn him over to the Taliban; instead, bound by the tradition of lokhay, they made what he called “an unbreakable commitment to defend [him] to the death. And not just the death of the principal tribesman or family who made the original commitment…the whole damned village.”
Despite the assurances of his initial contact and, ultimately, friend, Sarawan, Luttrell’s training, instinct, and deep, debilitating fear urged him to distrust the safety he had been offered so freely and to set off as soon as possible to seek a military outpost. But even as he waited either to be killed by the Taliban or rescued by his fellow Marines, he refused to dwell on the past or his future, maintaining mastery of his mind and remaining in the moment.
To be a Fearless Leader means you are able to stay in control and focused in the present because you have a unique belief in your own conscious and subconscious minds when most other people don’t. You are master of your mind and don’t allow yourself to become victimized by unrealistic fears or unfounded negative thoughts.
Here are four brief steps to replace destructive thoughts with constructive ones in order to control your mind:
- Recognize the destructive thought.
- Stop and RESET the destructive thought!
- Replace the destructive thought with a constructive thought.
- Reward/Enjoy gaining control of your mind!
Have you already begun to do any of these things? I’d love to know. We’ll explore each of these steps in our next blog post. Thanks!
