How to Become Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

How can you get comfortable with being uncomfortable?

Use these following techniques to learn, grow, improve and step out of fear.

Brief intervals. You can build up your tolerance for discomfort by intervals. It’s like getting into better physical condition: You need to work out several times a week over a long period of time in order to achieve your goals. The same applies to strengthening all aspects of your mind.

Focus on one area. Choose one area of your life, or one goal you’re working on, and push yourself just a little harder than you think is possible every day for a specific number of days.

Your first step could be to have a goal to push yourself harder than you ever have before, by just a little, for just one day.

When you are successful, then your second goal could be to push yourself that hard again, this time for two days in a row. You can continue to build slowly and steadily like this and, over time, you’ll feel better about yourself, and you’ll get better at whatever it is you’re doing.

Remember, if Plan A doesn’t work, there are still 25 letters left in the alphabet.

Don’t let fear destroy your dreams.

Fear is one of the most powerful human emotions. Its grip is strong and pervasive. To maximize your success in leadership you must learn to identify and control your fears instead of letting your fears control you.

We all have either conscious or subconscious fears that block our success. Fearless Leaders take on and resolve their blocks to success. They learn to master their fears. When you learn to identify your fears and channel them into constructive, positive thoughts and actions you are the master of your fears.

Fearless Leaders are not devoid of fear. They are leaders who don’t let fear destroy their dreams.

They recognize that the inability to take risks in the face of fear can be more dangerous – to them and to those around them – than anything that can happen as a result of their actions. The easy way is the safe way but, as John F. Kennedy said about the American mission to put a man on the moon: “We do these things not because they are easy but because they are hard.”

Apart from universal and dramatic fears (such as the fear of death), some fears may seem mundane or even foolish but they nevertheless can limit or even prevent a leader’s success.

These include:

  • fear of failure,
  • fear of success,
  • fear of rejection and
  • fear of selling.

We’re going to discuss each of these in some detail; as you read, think about which of these fears may have limited you and your own success.

But first, I’d like to know which of these fears you feel hinders you. Thanks for sharing!
